Central Hall Musical Society
Central Hall Musical Society is the University of York’s leading musical theatre society. We perform 3 external shows, two internal musical theatre showcases per academic year, plus 3 cabaret-style soirees and 24 hour musicals on campus. We run fundraising events and big socials throughout the year as well. Our 25/26 external shows were Beauty and the Beast at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, Be More Chill at Theatre@41 and Bonnie and Clyde at Rowntree Park. This year CHMS’s first two external shows will be bare (December 2026) and Footloose (February 2027).
We cast students of all year groups and abilities, so there are opportunities for everyone, whatever your age, stage, and experience! The production teams and orchestras for all our productions consist entirely of students, so there are plenty of opportunities on and offstage every term of every year.
Meeting Times
Rehearsals for our productions are based around cast and prod team availability. Book musicals tend to rehearse three times per week, while showcase schedules are less intense. We host socials and smaller musical performances regularly throughout the year.

Get Involved
CHMS membership covers involvement on- and offstage for the whole academic year. Auditions for our book musicals are open to everyone at the university, though casting will be based on the requirements of the script. Membership can be bought through the YorkSU website and anyone is welcome to join the weekly mailing list at Welcome Fair, on our Instagram linktree (@chmsyork) or by emailing centralhall@yorksu.org.
