Smaller groups often play on early instruments; the larger ensemble is more often on modern instruments but exploring historically-informed performance style. The ensemble is directed by Lucy Russell (violin), Rachel Gray (cello) who are members of the Yorkshire Baroque Soloists, one of the Department's Associate Artists, and by Peter Seymour (harpsichord) who coach and perform with the Ensemble on a regular basis. Previously we have played music by such composers as Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, Miles Davis, Sun Ra and J Dilla For anybody interested in playing Jazz and Jazz-adjacent music. The band focuses on written music as well as strong emphasis on improvisation and learning by ear. Non-improvisers and people in the early stages of learning how to improvise are very much welcome to come and learn alongside more experienced improvisers. The ensemble provides performance opportunities to perform in our yearly concert in the spring at the National Centre for Early Music as well as the Universities Jazz Festival. It is played by an ensemble (also called a Gamelan) predominantly comprising bronze gongs and metallophones, with bamboo flutes, strings and other percussion. The University of York instruments - named ‘Sekar Petak’ (‘White Flower’) in honour of Yorkshire’s white rose symbol - was the first purpose-built Javanese gamelan in a British university. The instruments were first assembled and played in 1981, having been commissioned by the Department of Music's Dr Neil Sorrell from master craftsman Bapak Tentrem Sarwanto. On 22 November each year, the anniversary of the Gamelan is marked by an informal playing session at which it is presented with flowers and fruit. The group provides a public forum for new undergraduate and postgraduate compositions and also gives students the opportunity to perform challenging contemporary repertoire. Recent performances have included Ligeti's Chamber Concerto, Donatoni's Spiri, Grisey's Partiels and Roger Marsh's Kagura. At the end of each term the Chimera Ensemble presents a day of events, usually consisting of two concerts, an open rehearsal, and a pre-concert talk. The University of York's Oldest Performance Society - now in our 52nd year! Who are we and what do we do? We are an all-inclusive award-winning society that put on a range of musicals and events over the course of the year. Our main production is a fully staged G&S show, which for next year will be Iolanthe, performed in March 2025. We have a completely non-auditioned chorus for our show each year open to people of any ability, with auditioned main roles. We also stage a 48 hour show (meaning that over two days we cast, rehearse and perform a full G&S production) in November 2024 we will be doing the iconic The Sorcerer. We organise a variety of showcases and fundraisers (carolling for charity in York city centre is always a highlight of the year!) as well as inclusive social events. During the summer holidays we take our main show to the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton. In 2024 we performed Princess Ida at the festival, winning best male voice, best female voice and best ensemble. We also won the Unifest competition overall, gaining international recognition (and taking home a large cash prize)!
